Untraditional Holidays!

Holidays are supposed to be filled with family and friends. However, the holidays, family, and friends can bring more heartache and stress than one needs. Do not get me wrong. When family and friends do not look down on you, the holidays can be wonderful.

I wish I knew that feeling. But my parents were the family joke, and my siblings and I were looked down on. Friends have been worse. I discovered that people I thought were my friends were not friends at all.

So how do we handle the holidays? We choose who we want to spend the holidays with. If family invites you, you ask yourself if those people make you happy. If friends invite you, ask yourself: Do these friends lift you up and make a positive impact on your life?

If the answer is no, decide whether you really want to keep these people in your life. Also, do you really want to stress about what your family thinks about you? The answer should be a resounding no; however, I do realize that sometimes, when it comes to family and friends, you don't want to lose that connection. I am lucky, though, because my family and friends show their true colors, and, honestly, they did it at the perfect time. So what does that mean for my holiday schedule?

Well, I decided that if people want to see me, they can come to me; I'm not going to make an effort to go to somebody's home to be looked down on and ridiculed. I also don't have to spend hours creating an elaborate spread for people to eat and leave because they feel obligated.
This year we are just going to the river, lake, or the Bay. We will load up in the boat, go fishing, and have fun. As long as my partner and I are together, that is all that matters. If my daughter wants to join the fun, she is more than welcome to; she knows she never needs an invitation.
Don’t stress yourself; holiday stress is brutal. Do what makes you happy and enjoy life; it's way too short. I hope whatever you do this holiday season makes you happy, and if you have any ideas, go ahead and leave them below.
